Katia Canton

São Paulo, 1962


Katia Canton is a writer, artist and educator. Born in 1962, São Paulo, hometown, studied Dance, Architecture (Universidade Mackenzie) and Journalism (ECA-USP). Previously, living in New York, became master in Performance Studies and PhD in Interdisciplinary Arts, both titles achieved at New York University. Her doctoral dissertation articulates the relation of arts with fairytale. She's an Associate Professor and currently vice director of the Museu de Arte Contemporânea at USP. As a writer, dedicates herself particulary to books about art and illustrated books, having received many prizes, among them three Jabuti Prizes. As an artist and educator, performs exhibitions, lectures, workshops and artistic residence in Brazil and outside.

While studying architecture, at the 80s, Katia Canton created many paintings, specially in watercolor. Participated at the residence and art show at Tumkur University, In India, 2008, and in 2009 became part of the collective Eros/Heroes, in Turim, Italy. Participated, also, in other exhibitions, in Liptov, Slovakia and in Parque Buenos Aires, in São Paulo. Was chosen, in 2013, as an invited artist and lecturer to the 10th edition of the "European Artists" exhibition and residence, in Essen, Germany.

Recently, concluded a post-doctoral research at the Steinhardt School's art departament, New York University, about contemporary art and narrative, involving her production and of other artists connected to the university.
